The Return of Isa (a.s)

The Return of Isa (a.s) as the Messiah is a commonly held and widely accepted belief amongst Muslims, and the return of the Messiah is one of the most important signs of the End Times. However, in recent years, many Islamic scholars have been spreading false narratives which claim that Isa (a.s) will not return and that there is no direct evidence indicating the return of Isa (a.s) from the Holy Quran.

We analyse key prophecies found directly in the Holy Quran that can only be fulfilled upon a second return of Isa (a.s) - providing direct Quranic proof about the second coming of Isa (a.s) as the Messiah.

Speech of Isa (a.s) in middle age

The Holy Quran informs us that Isa (a.s) will have two distinct periods of speech during his life which will be miraculous. The first period of speech being when Isa (a.s) spoke 'in the cradle' as an infant child, and the second period of speech being when Isa (a.s) is a 'middle aged man'. We are also told that Isa (a.s) was not killed or crucified, but was raised up alive by Allah (s.w.t) to himself. According to biblical and historical analysis, Isa (a.s) was only in his early thrities at the time when he was raised up alive, and the arabic term used in the Quran to denote 'middle aged man' implies a minimum age in the mid to late thirties.

That means that Isa (a.s) never spoke as a middle aged man upon his first appearance, and must return a second time to fulfill the Quranic prophecy about his second segment of miraculous speech.

Isa (a.s) as the Messiah

The Quran clearly states that Isa (a.s) is the Messiah, and it is commonly understood by most people that Messiah means saviour or healer, however, Messiah actually means 'the anointed one'. Anointing is a purification ritual through which Kings would be spiritually cleansed before taking their office as ruler. The King and Prophet Hzt Dawood (a.s) was anointed by Hzt Shimool (a.s) - Prophet Samuel. Even today, the British monarchy, which views itself as descendants of the Davidic line of Kings, carries out an anointing ceremony upon the coronotation of the new monarch.

Therefore, if Isa (a.s) is a Messiah anointed by Allah (s.w.t), then this implies that Isa (a.s) has been destined to hold the office of kingship - however, Isa (a.s) was never a king upon his fist appearance as a Prophet to the Bani Israel. We must therefore consider, how can Isa (a.s) fulfill his role as a King, and the simple answer is that Isa (a.s) will fulfill his role as King upon his second return, where he will defeat Al Messih Ad Dajjal (the Anticrhist) and establish a righteous and holy kingdom - and this is corroborated by Sahih Ahadith.

Surah az-Zukhruf prophecy about Isa (a.s)

In Surah az-Zukhruf of the Holy Quran (43:61), we are clearly told that "Isa (a.s) is a sign of the Last Hour and the we should not be in doubt of it". Furthermore, we are told in hadith 4042 of Sunan Ibn Majah that the first sign of the End Times and the Last Hour is the death of the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w). Therefore, we must consider that if Isa (a.s) appeared 600 years before the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w), and the death of the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) is the first sign of the Last Hour, then how can Isa (a.s) also be a sign of the Last Hour, since the Last Hour only began 600 years after the appearance of Isa (a.s). The answer is simply that Surah az-Zukhruf is referring to the re-appearance of Isa (a.s) a second time in the future, during the End Times, and that his second coming will be the major sign for the believers at that time, that the Last Hour is nearly upon them.

The People of the Book will all believe in Isa (a.s)

We are told in the Holy Quran that all of the People of the Book (including the Jews and the Christians) will assuredly believe in Isa (a.s) before his death. We are also told in the Holy Quran that modern day Christians are Kafirs due to their belief in a Trinity and ascribing god-hood to Isa (a.s). We are also told that the Bani Israel disbelieved in Isa (a.s) and accused him of being a sorcerer and false prophet. Therefore, we must consider, how will the correct belief about Isa (a.s) be established among all of the people of the book. What will cause the Jews to accept that Isa (a.s) is the Messiah, and what will cause Christians to accept the Isa (a.s) is not the son-of-god but Allah's messenger and servant. This acceptance of the People of the Book in the correct belief of Isa (a.s) will occur upon the second return of Isa (a.s), where he will speak to the people of the book, and confirm the truth to them.
